Improving offender health through better partnership

Developing effective strategies to improve offender health is a challenge for NHS commissioning organisations and Prison Services. Getting to know each others priorities, challenges, language and to build trust are some of the areas not often seen on Partnership Board agendas which lead to many “elephants” joining the party!!

We have been working with a local Partnership Board to help develop a common vision for the future and to begin to identify what building blocks need to be in place to begin to move towards that vision. We plan to liberate any elephants we find along the way!!

Facilitating performance improvement

We have seen an increase in the number of requests for facilitation as a part of proactive organisational development and performance improvement models.

Facilitation enables participants to actively participate in problem solving and fosters an environment where innovative ideas flourish and grow.

For example, We have recently held a session for a team who are part of a large organisation. The CEO felt this team were not performing as well as they should be and wanted to understand the issues and how to move forward. As a result of our facilitation of a half day session, the organisation has a better picture of the issues as perceived by the team, an agreed set of actions to address these and a range of ideas to discuss in more depth which could lead to real change and innovative solutions.

Developing strategy, involving stakeholders

We are working with a Primary Care Trust to develop a new strategy for services provided by GPs, dentists, opticians and pharmacies. As this is the first time such a strategy has been developed, our role is to facilitate stakeholder involvement in shaping the strategy and to provide an outline way forward.

Assessing Skills, Discovering Potential

Wilson Goodchild has been working with leaders, managers and clinicians at Bassetlaw PCT to assess their skills and capability to become World Class Commissioners.

Using the Department of Health guidance on World Class Commissioning Competencies we undertook a skills assessment with the senior team and the professional executive committee. The assessment took the form of 1-1 and telephone interviews with each participant considering whether the skill was something they were able to do, able to train others or an area that required development.

The results not only identified where the PCT strengths lay and where there was greatest need to develop. They also provided an indication of where there was internal capability to develop others and where an external solutions was required.

Individuals now also have a tool to use to inform their continuous professional development and which can be used to reflect on their progress. The sessions were valued by staff as the following informal feedback describes…

“Thank you for…..and also for a really useful and enjoyable meeting last week” (by e-mail from Penny)

Janette is enthusiastic with a real interest in helping people achieve their potential. We are now working with the PCT to use the knowledge gained from this exercise to design and facilitate their future leadership and management development programmes.

Career coaching service launched

Wilson Goodchild yesterday introduced a new executive and senior manager career coaching service to support individuals achieve their work and career goals. The service will be provided by Janette Goodchild a qualified Careers Guidance Practitioner with over 20 years experience supporting people to achieve their potential.

The service is based on one-to-one interactions to help individuals:

assess their strengths, areas for development and priorities
set short , medium and long-term goals
develop reflective learning techniques

The service can be procured by organisations for their senior teams or directly by individuals seeking independent advice.

Janette is able to deliver this service at your workplace, at an independent location or through video-conferencing. A few dates are available during 2009 with wider availability from January 2010 onwards.
