2012: a year of transition

Isn’t it funny how themes and ideas feel unique but once you start to talk to others there is often similarity in the direction of travel?

I was at a networking event and introduced myself and my business which up until 2012 have been one and the same. If you bought services from Wilson Goodchild then you buy a bit of my time, expertise and solution finding abilities. However in 2012, I have made a conscious decision to explore ways to expand the business from me to us. So as part of my introduction, I said 2012 was a year of transition, as introductions went around the room this theme of transition really took off with people exploring new avenues, new ways of working, offering new services and a willingness to help each other succeed began to grow. We all hear in the news that 2012 will be a difficult one for the UK but perhaps we can use this as an opportunity to begin our own transitions, working together and supporting each other to realise our visions, hopes and dreams for the future.

In 2012, Wilson Goodchild would like to be offering opportunities to young people to experience work, working with self-employed and small businesses to help them thrive and creating new opportunities for local people young and old to achieve their aspirations and to make a difference. Excellent Employer Series Workshop 1: Reducing the risk of employment tribunal claims

Wilson Goodchild has teamed up with De Hales and associates to design a new excellent employer series of workshops. One of the ways Wilson Goodchild Ltd supports organisations to make a difference is to provide onsite and offsite project support. This support is often at a programme/project manager level where we will co-ordinate and allocate resources, raise awareness of the project with stakeholders and potential beneficiaries/ project users and ensure the project runs to time and budget monitoring and reviewing outputs and outcomes along the way. Turning learning into practice

After three days professional development in relation to advising social enterprises in July, we have over the past few weeks been using some of the tools and techniques learnt in practice. We have been supporting a self help group for a while. They are now considering the move to becoming a social enterprise and the Cooperatives UK Select-a-structure tool has really helped to highlight not only the possible options for them in terms of structure but also some of the gaps in their thinking which need to be addressed before moving forward further.

Supporting social enterprises

Last week, Janette spent three days learning how to advise and support social enterprises to start, grow and develop. The programme written by RISE and delivered by Social Enterprise East Midlands (SEEM) is aimed at experienced business advisers and covered everything from articulating ideas into a business plan, deciding on legal structures through to performance review, sustainability and growth. The course is based on the small firms enterprise development initiative (SFEDI) standards for business advice and focusses on the additional areas required for providing advice to social enterprises.

Social enterprise is an area of particular interest. It is motivating and rewarding to help people develop businesses which not only make a profit but also have written in to their purpose social and/ or environmental benefits.

I am really looking forward to putting my new skills and knowledge into practice.

At a recent workforce development conference, we were discussing strategies to attract a more diverse workforce. Ideas included the usual increasing the range and number of entry points, reviewing entry requirements, creating better links with the local community amongst others.
There were people in our group who had overcome a range of barriers to secure the roles have now. Of these many had not been helped by government initiatives to diversify the workforce but rather had made it through shear determination and ambition.
It struck me that these people’s experiences weren’t being used to help shape and change access nor to inform recruitment strategy. No one asked about the barriers and challenges they had overcome on their way to success.
Are you overlooking possible answers to some of your business challenges by not involving or learning from the experiences of your workforce?

New service: graphic recording

We are now able to offer you facilitators who are able to use both words and pictures to capture the essence of your meetings, workshops and discussion groups.

Graphic recording is a process that records meetings in words and pictures on large visual displays. Using words and pictures stimulates group creativity, productivity and understanding. The display provides a group memory of the meeting that is easy to understand and share with others.

People who have a difficulty in expressing themselves in words often find pictures and diagrams helpful, and are stimulated to participate.
